Bankhandi Mahadev Temple, Sarsawa
Bankhandi Mahadev Temple is a prominent religious site located in Sarsawa, approximately 15 km west of Saharanpur district headquarters.
According to popular belief, during the exile of the Pandavas in the Mahabharata period, Sahadev performed intense penance to please Lord Shiva. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva asked him to seek a boon. Sahadev requested that Lord Shiva be established at this place in the form of a Pindi (sacred form) for the welfare of mankind, which Lord Shiva gladly accepted. Thereafter, Sahadev established the Shivling here.
It is believed that since then Lord Shiva has been present here in the form of a Pindi. In ancient times, this area was covered with dense forests, and due to the abundance of Siras trees, it was known as Sirsavan or Sirsapattan, which later came to be known as Sarsawa.
Since the Shivling was established in a part of the forest (Van Khand), it became known as Bankhandi Mahadev. The temple holds great religious importance and attracts devotees throughout the year.
