Saharanpur district became a division of Uttar Pradesh in 1997, and Saharanpur city attained Municipal Corporation status on 1 October 2009, becoming the 13th municipal corporation in the state. It is the administrative headquarters of Saharanpur District and Division and is famous for its wood-carving cottage industry, which earns foreign exchange. The district is bordered by the Shivalik Hills in the north and northeast, the Yamuna River and Haryana in the west, Haridwar in the east, and Muzaffarnagar in the south. It covers an area of 3,689 square kilometres and had a population of 3,467,332 according to the 2011 Census. Saharanpur is primarily an agricultural district.
