Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM)
The Sub-Divisional Magistrate is the head of a subdivision or tehsil and functions as a representative of the District Magistrate within his jurisdiction.
The SDM performs revenue, magisterial and executive functions within the subdivision/tehsil. He supervises Tehsildars and revenue staff, maintains law and order, conducts revenue court proceedings and monitors development activities. During elections, he is generally appointed as Returning Officer or Assistant Returning Officer.
Tehsildar / Naib Tehsildar
The Tehsildars and Naib Tehsildars are key officers in revenue administration. Their responsibilities include collection of land revenue, maintenance of revenue records, disposal of mutation and partition cases, supervision of Lekhpals and Kanungos, and conducting field inspections. They assess crop conditions, provide relief during natural calamities and decide urgent matters on the spot. Tehsildars generally function as Sub-Registrars for property registration under the Registration Act.
